It is our honor to announce our December 2020 Student of the Month, Mina Siatuu from the Class of 2021.
Mina has been a student or ASB leader in some way, since her Freshman year. She serves as YHS ASB Treasurer and the FBLA Vice President and, in spite of the distance learning circumstances, has been able to learn and grow in her responsibilities. Mina is kind, calm and committed to achieving. Mina takes multiple honors and AP courses and, as not a native English speaker, has worked hard to maintain a high GPA throughout high school, especially during virtual learning. She volunteers in the community and has big plans of going to a military school upon graduation.

We are excited to announce our November 2020 Student of the Month, Olivia Perry.
Olivia has a heart of service and is always looking to serve others. She is involved with numerous organizations both in and out of school. She is currently the YHS FFA secretary where she spends time taking minutes and works on committee’s such as Adopt a Family. She has been the head of this committee for 3 years, the past 2 of which we have had record collection numbers. Olivia also serves in other ways through her Church. She volunteers in the daycare during service and has taught some of the younger Sunday school classes. She is also an Honor Society member and summer camp leader.
In addition to being an outstanding community member, Olivia is also an excellent student. She is a running start student at Clover Park and attends classes at the High School to stay connected. She is going to school to be a pilot and has already been doing practice flying! She has maintained excellent grades throughout all of high school all while pouring herself into her volunteer activities.
She also has a competitive side to her and she loves to compete on the volleyball court as well as in FFA competitions. Olivia has played on the High school and club volleyball teams for all 4 years of high school (except for this COVID year). In FFA she has excelled in her 2 contest sales and nursery landscape. The last 2 years their Nursery Landscape team has taken 2nd place in the State. It is all due to her constant effort and study skills. She will complete this Spring again for another shot at winning first and going to Nationals. We are proud of Olivia and excited for her future!

We are pleased to announce our October 2020 Student of the month Paulina Flores Hernadez - Class of 2021
Paulina is every teacher's dream. She is a hard worker and strives for academic excellence. She plays an active role in supporting her family, is responsible enough to hold a job outside of school to pay for the College in the High School credits (which also shows her determination and drive), and helps lead the YHS LatinX club. Paulina is also friendly and always willing to help her peers and teachers. Over the last few months, Paulina has volunteered after school to help several native Spanish speakers communicate with their teachers and help tutor students in both ability to communicate and content area classes. She doesn’t just do her work but she goes out of her way to help others find success. She is a leader in the YHS LatinX club, Tutors peers (both English and in Spanish) and is involved in Church activities where she mentors younger students, participates in cultural dancing, helps put on festivals and more.
She also plays Volleyball, Translates for our Latin Community, and participates in leadership activities during the summer.
Her goal is to become a kindergarten teacher and we have no doubt that this hard working young lady with a huge heart can succeed.
Thank you to our business partners. We all wish you the very best!

The Rotary Club of Yelm along with our Business Partners wish you all the best:

As we finish 10 weeks of Summer Lunch Program we are reminded just how generous this community is.  Our faithful volunteers that come out each week and help us bag is amazing.  I can't say enough about them.  They all show up ready to help in any way they can.  It is truly community connected!

Bagging the food.

The Rotary Club of Yelm is bringing their community together to serve a need in feeding children this summer.  This will is our 3rd summer of the summer lunch program, nicknamed the “10 Weeks of Summer”.
The target is to reach children who are receiving free and reduced lunches during the school year. When school is out, their need for nourishment continues. So, each week through the summer you will find Rotary members, and other community volunteers, busy packing about 200 bags of food for the kids. Last summer they distributed over 1800 bags and they expect to do even more this year!  We have added a distribution point in Rainier this year and it is proving to be popular.
Each Sunday afternoon begins by picking up their load of food from Walmart.  Walmart is a great partner in this program and has also awarded a $5000 grant to the club.

The truck then makes the 1 mile trip to the Yelm Senior Center, where the food is unloaded by community volunteers and Rotarians.  We couldn't do it without all the community support.  This is truly a community project!

An assembly line is formed to bag the food in re-useable grocery bags donated by local business partners. The club has it down to an art and can have all the food unloaded and bagged in less than 2 hours!

Each Tuesday morning the teams pick up the bagged food and head out to meet the kids and parents at their distribution points. We are serving many new families this year as well as those we served last year. The need is there and they are grateful for the extra help
The total estimated cost of the summer program is $20,000. The club was approved for a $3,500 district grant from Rotary International, and The Nisqually Tribe awarded another grant of $5,000. Walmart of Yelm awarded a $5000 grant and provides a discount of the weekly food purchase and helps with the shopping and loading.   The remainder of the cost is covered with Club funds and other donations from supportive community members.
